Tulsi Gowda has planted more than 30,000 saplings and looks after the nurseries of the Forest Department. She is not educated and despite no education, she has made immense contributions towards preserving the environment.

Tulsi Gowda is an Indian environmentalist was born into a Hakkali tribal family in the village of Honnally, a transition between rural and urban areas in the Uttara Kannada district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Karnataka is a state in southern India, known for its eco-tourism sites as it has twenty-five wildlife sanctuaries and five national parks.
Tulsi Gowda’s first name is directly related to nature and is derived from the Kannada word tulsi (means holy plant in Hinduism). Holy Tulsi is considered to be the first manifestation of the goddess in Hinduism and many Hindu families do not consider their home complete without the holy tulsi plant for worship.
Tusli’s father died when she was only 2, casuing her working alongside her mother as a daily laborer once she was old enough. As a result she didn’t get education, she is illiterate, not able to read or write. Her mother language is Kannada, less commonly known as Kanarese.

Tulsi was married at a young age to an older man named Govinde Gowda, and her husband died when she was in her 50s. At the nursery, Gowda was responsible for taking care of the seeds that were to be grown and harvested at the Karnataka Forestry Department, and she specifically cared for the seeds that were meant to be a part of the Agasur seedbed.
