Three people were killed and others injured when a train derailed in the US state of Montana, according to the railroad company Amtrak.
The company said that eight of the train’s cars derailed at about 16:00 local time (22:00 GMT), near the city of Joplin, near the border with Canada in northern Montana.
She noted that about 141 passengers and 16 crew members were on the train from Seattle to Chicago.
“It is with great sadness that we have been informed that the local authorities are now confirming the death of three people as a result of this accident,” the company said, noting a number of injured passengers and crew members.
Amtrak said it has dispatched teams to the scene working with local authorities to transport the injured passengers and safely evacuate all other passengers.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, and the National Transportation Safety Board, a federal agency, announced on Twitter that an investigation had been opened.
Video footage posted on social media and published by local media showed people near the railways, with luggage scattered next to them, looking at train cars, at least one of which had overturned.
More than 50 people were injured, Amanda Freckle, Montana Emergency, and Disaster Services Coordinator, told the New York Times.
She explained that paramedics teams are on the scene and that there are many hospitals and medical helicopters ready to intervene.
“All the people still alive were taken out of the train structure,” she added.
Senator John Tester of Montana confirmed that he is following up on the matter.
“My thoughts go to all the passengers, the crew, and the first to intervene on the ground,” he said.
After the accident, Amtrak announced the cancellation of several train trips Saturday, especially between North Dakota and Montana.
The US rail network is chronically underfunded and regularly sees fatal accidents.
In February 2018, two people were killed and 70 injured in a train collision in South Carolina.
This came days after an accident between a train carrying Republican officials and a truck in Virginia, “southeast,” killing one person and wounding six others.
In December 2017, three people were killed when a train derailed in Washington state, which caused several cars to overturn from a bridge on a highway.
