Dallas Sting coach responds to Hollywood backing out of movie

Bill Kinder was to be portrayed by Matthew McConaughey. That plan is now on indefinite hold.

RICHARDSON, Texas — The first time Bill Kinder said Hollywood producers were hesitant to tell the story of his version of 1980s women’s soccer team Dallas Sting came on a phone call on Aug. 29.

“The Sting evolved from the Spring Valley Athletic Association,” he was telling the WFAA in an interview at Richardson’s home in an office rich with mementos and memorabilia from a four-decade coaching career.

“We were the first girls program we knew, probably anywhere in the country,” she said when we began discussing her participation in leading a team of young women to a tournament in China.

“We started a football program at the behest and encouragement of Lamar Hunt,” he said. “And the girls didn’t play football then. There was no other girls football team.”

Long before the idea of a US women’s national football team was born, in 1984, Dallas Sting was selected by the US Soccer Federation to represent the US in Xi’an, China, the first ever FIFA tournament for women’s national teams. . The Sting faced established national teams from countries around the world, beating Australia, Japan and China to reach the final where they defeated Italy.

“We believed we were fitter, more prepared, able to compete with anyone anywhere,” Kinder said.

Her story has revolved around Hollywood for several years, most recently with Skydance Media production and Matthew McConaughey signing on to play Kinder.

“I thought the girls’ achievement deserved the recognition they deserved,” Kinder told the WFAA in an interview on August 29. And the recognition that I believe they deserved was the fact that they were the instigators who started the United States Football Federation’s larger movement to create a national team.”

“I think about what the girls achieved, what they started, what they helped create and create, I think would definitely be a film that deserves the recognition.”

“He’s a good actor. He’s a Texas guy,” he said of McConaughey’s pending portrayal of Coach. “She doesn’t have to work on the pronunciation. It will be natural for her.”

But in the middle of that August 29 interview, Kinder received a call from one of the filmmakers, telling McConaughey’s team had received a letter leveling decades-old allegations against him. The producer said that the allegations were not of criminal nature. But a third party investigating the allegations will contact them for additional information.

“I would look forward to talking to them,” Kinder told the producer over the phone.

“Any idea what that would be,” I asked him after the phone call.

“I have no clue. I have no clue,” he said. “Nothing can be important because there is nothing important in my life that I can think of.”

But now, two weeks after that phone call, Skydance and McConaughey decided to pull out of the project a few weeks before the start of filming scheduled for next month in Louisiana, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Skydance has yet to respond to the WFAA’s request for additional clarification on the “misconduct allegations.” Kinder says he doesn’t even know the specifics.

“We are in the dark and want to know but don’t know whether we will,” he said in a September 15 phone conversation with the WFAA. “We hope to learn more,” he said.

He also said that for the benefit of the 1984 Dallas Sting team, many of whose players he says are still in and in touch with the Dallas area, he hopes Hollywood will eventually share his story with the world.

“I hope and have been promised to everyone involved, that it will be an uplifting positive story,” he said during our August interview. “And ultimately the girls get credit for what they have achieved.”

Achievements, at least in Hollywood, that still stall.
